Book Week Scotland
Carrick Academy celebrated Book Week Scotland with a series of events involving both staff and pupils. During the week, we ran a half price book fair in the Assembly Hall. There was a fantastic selection of books on offer including some New Releases. This event was a great success with pupils and staff buying books to read for pleasure or Christmas presents.
Drop Everything and Read took place on Thursday 30th. This is a popular event where the whole school stops what they are doing and read a book, magazine, kindle etc for 20 minutes.
Pupils had the chance to win book tokens by taking part in our 'Caught Reading' photo competition. There were some very imaginative entries - including pictures from staff in some exotic locations! Our haiku competition for S1 and S2 gave pupils the chance to win a hamper of Scottish food- well, sweeties. We had many brilliant entries, all of them making very imaginative use of Scots lied.
Staff had the chance to show off their creative skills during the Cupcake Decorating Challenge, the theme being St. Andrews Day. The three best decorated cupcakes receiving house points for their house.
The week was a huge success and importantly helped to promote the importance of reading for pleasure. Reading leads to improved literacy which, in turn, improves attainment across all subjects. We look forward to running this event next year!
